In the fall of 2022, I am entering into a season that I call “My Truly Senior Year”. It is truly senior because I am (finally!) a senior at Western Connecticut State University and a senior citizen. In my wallet, I have both a student ID card and a Medicare card.
Still a Sophomore
My journey at WCSU began in August 2018 as a part-time student in a program called Bachelor of Music in Audio and Music Production. The twenty-two credits that I earned in the early 1970s transferred! But that meant I was still a sophomore, a word that means wise fool.
Who’s the Old Guy? Over the last four years, I’ve made many amazing friends and memories. For example, on the first day of the Ear Training class, we were asked to share something interesting about ourselves. When it was my turn I said, “I used to write songs for Barney, the big purple dinosaur.” The whole class burst into laughter, oohs, and ahhs! With our professor’s prodding, I broke into one of my Barney songs that was recognized by many of my 19-year-old classmates. At that moment I went from oddity to rock star.
At the time, I didn’t write much about my experiences as a non-traditional student except for a few random social media posts. Well. That’s about to change!
Senior Moments
My intention with this blog is to journal the highlights of my experience as a college senior citizen. It will include new stuff I learned today, notable interactions with students and professors, and observations about being a life-long learner. I’m a music production major so I’ll also be sure to post links to completed audio projects.
While I hope this blog will have broad appeal, I think it will be especially of interest to students and personal growth enthusiasts.
Speak Up So I Can Hear You!
Please comment below. I’d love to hear your thoughts about My Truly Senior Year!
Angelo, it was a true pleasure having you in class! I think you inspired the younger students, and gave all us senior citizens hope!!! You are "young at heart."
"In my wallet, I have both a student ID card and a Medicare card." What a great statement!!

Am I the first to comment? Honored!
Aptly named blog, Angelo! I can’t wait to follow this.
